Recently the
BBC announced that they would be using BitTorrent technology to distribute hundreds of episodes of old programming via the internet.
Some of these files will be available in High Definition, unlike the content seen on other content sharing systems [YouTube, etc.]
BitTorrent technology allows people to more quickly acquire large files than standard downloading. For some time, Bit Torrent was the realm of illegal file trading. Information Week reports that the
first conviction for using BitTorrent illegal was handed down in Hong Kong.
This is another interesting case of the copyright law being behind the curve.
